Biography:

Case Conover (b. 1984) grew up on the coast of Maine, where his passion for earth, art, circles, and circus was born. It was on the mudflats near his house that he made his first artworks out of clay, stone, and ice. Developing a passion for Circus Arts at a young age, Case juggled, unicycled, and clowned his way into the Vermont-based youth troupe Circus Smirkus (1999). He went on to study visual art at Oberlin College (2006) in Ohio, where he co-founded OCircus!. He thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2004, and returned as a backcountry caretaker in the White Mountains for the following two summers. After Oberlin, he interned at the Oxbow School in Napa before moving to the East Bay to continue his work with printmaking, drawing and sculpture. Case is currently a member of the Oakland-based printmaking collective Patchwerk Press, and is an artist-in-residence at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.

Artist statement:

My art is primarily based around circular imagery relating to earth, life and growth. It is playful and experimental, but aims at sincerely honoring the beauty of this living planet. In a society so influenced by visual culture and a world so threatened by social, political, and ecological discord, providing iconic images of circularity and wholeness — reminders of ideals to work toward and truths that exist — has become my primary goal. To me, the circle is the quintessential image of wholeness, speaking of the larger cycles of which we are a part and the seamless connection between all matter, all life. I hope to draw attention to the Heart in the Earth and the Art in the Heart. Hear the art!
